West Coast Litany

Words & Music: Phyl Lobl

Our drive from Strachan to Queenstown on Tasmania's West Coast was lit by a series of rainbows. Mt Owen is one of the mountains bared by the mining operations in Queenstown. Residents at the time found that the sun shining on the coloured rock formation offered a splendid show by way of compensation for the defoliation.

Lyrics

It was rainbows all the way as I drove down to Strachan today,
Rainbows crowned the valley, rainbows ringed the storm.
As I passed the wet rock corner saw it catch the sun,
The wonder of the world was flashed and all my being sang.

Beauty lies within the eyes of those who choose to see,
Drumming in my head I hear the West Coast Litany.
That taught me how to listen to the rain and how to be,
Contented even though I know I've lost my liberty.

Saw Mt Owen's sunset show before the stars began to glow,
Watched it play the colours that jewelled the burning scars.
Never smelt the sulphured smoke or saw the twisted trees,
How could I stay if all I knew were testaments like these.

Beauty lies within the eyes of those who choose to see,
Drumming in my head I hear the West Coast Litany.
That taught me how to listen to the rain and how to be,
Contented even though I know I've lost my liberty.
