A few days after Allende and democracy died in Chile I used a song to ask questions. They were later answered in the way we thought they would be. Geri Lobl's knowledge of the ways of the world was a strong influence on the song's development.

LAMENT FOR CHILE

Words & Music: Phyl Lobl

Time has passed, the dream has ended,
Santiago grief I feel your hand,
Hear the shots and fear their echo,
Stars and stripes make shadows on the land.

Bright hope for man has gone.
In prison cells dissenters lie.
Mourn Allende, mourn your dead democracy
The eagle's wings are stained with blood,
Once more the people die.

Brazil was taken by the generals
in Uruguay the army won
Pinochet has taken Chile
did the CIA men load the gun?

Bright hope for man has gone.
In prison cells dissenters lie.
Mourn Allende, mourn your dead democracy
The eagle's wings are stained with blood,
Once more the people die.

Is the eagle changed to serpent
lending poison out with flags all furled?
Fangs can be as sharp as talons
but not so easily noticed by the world.

Bright hope for man has gone.
In prison cells dissenters lie.
Mourn Allende, mourn your dead democracy
The eagle's wings are stained with blood,
Once more the people die.

More than life lost at Moneda
a martyred man will serve you still.
But peaceful change was blindly murdered
the message taught was when you win, you kill.

Bright hope for man has gone.
In prison cells dissenters lie.
Mourn Allende, mourn your dead democracy
The eagle's wings are stained with blood,
Once more the people die.
