Most instrument playing requires the fingers to move independently. Toys that invite squeezing or button pushing can aid this. The 'ringfinger' is usually much weaker and may require more attention to become independent. To test for independence, lie the hand flat and raise and lower each finger several times adding speed and pressure. To give variety use rhymes and songs like the following ones to help children become aware of their hands and and so lead to the development of fine motor skills. As well as aiding the developing of instrumental skills they are useful in the gaining of writing skills. |
