I haven't actually recorded this song myself but others have. Foremost is Scottish singer Jean Redpath. I had attended one of her workshops in Scotland and somehow this song was on her tape of a session. Years later she asked if she could record it. It is on her CD 'Summer of My Dreams'. (Jean Redpath has given permission for her version of 'Blackbird' from the CD 'Summer of My Dreams' to be used on this web-site.)
Each chorus has a different third line to follow the seasons.
Notation for this song is also available in the Bronzewing Songbook.

BLACKBIRD

Words, Music: Phyl Lobl; Sung by Jean Redpath

Tonight I think of the blackbird love
That stayed so short in time.
She learned to fly then found the sky
And from the ground we watcher her climb.

Blackbird, blackbird spread your wings,
Follow the circling sun

*For Spring is a returning thing
And love the guiding one.

Bonny was the blackbird love
With eyes so quick to shine.
Fresh of face but fond of space
But more of yours than mine.

*For Summer is a learning thing,

Someone found the blackbird love
And ruffled up her wings,
Then tried to soothe and stayed to prove
That love is many things.

*For Autumn is a burning thing.

The years have claimed the blackbird love,
And paled her image grey,
But tears she shed in an Eastern bed
Have washed the veil away.

*For winter is a yearning thing.

I see the face of the Blackbird love,
Shining through her sorrow.
I'd like to tell the blackbird love
There's beauty in tomorrow.

Blackbird, blackbird spread your wings,
Follow the circling sun

*For Spring is a returning thing
And love the guiding one.
